Suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked travelers in military convoy,
killing two passengers with the wounding of several others along the
Damaturu-Biu road on Sunday in Yobe state.

The injured, according to Military and State’s Specialists Hospital
authorities in Damaturu, were evacuated to hospital for treatments.
“Our convoy along with some civilian motorists and travelers were
attacked this morning, but the armed insurgents were repelled in a
thirty-fierce gun battle on this road under contractions,” said a
soldier, who was not authorized to speak on the incident.

He said the death of two passengers, was caused by an Improvised
Explosive Devices (IEDs) buried on the side of the 121-kilometre
Damaturu-Biu road that was opened by Chief of Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur
Buratai last year.

“We departed peacefully from Damaturu, the state capital to Biu; when
the terrorists attacked our convoy along with motorists and passengers
at the rear,” he said.

He explained that the insurgents opened fire indiscriminately on the
travelers while in attempt to escape and run over IEDs; which went off
and killed two passengers.

He said injured were rushed to the Damaturu Specialists’ Hospital by
security forces on patrol along the road.
Personnel of the Accident and Emergency ward of the hospital also
confirmed that three people have been treated and referred to the
Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gombe for further diagnosis and
treatments.

Sunday’s attack has also heightened fears among motorists and
passengers plying the opened roads in Borno and Yobe states.
The 187-kilometre Maiduguri- Damboa – Biu road has long been opened
for commuters but suffered several attacks, including the June 20,
2017 that claimed three lives with that abduction of 14 women by
insurgents.
