YOBE TASKS RED CROSS TO TRAIN, EMPOWER YOUTHS RESTORE LIVELIHOODS

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe state, has tasked the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to train and empower displaced persons restore their means of livelihoods.

The Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) were attacked and sacked from communities with the destruction of their means livelihoods during the over a decade Boko Haram insurgency.

 

Lamenting the humanitarian crises, yesterday (Thursday), in Damaturu, the Governor, represented by his Deputy, Idi Gubana, disclosed: “The Committee has contributed a lot in addressing the various humanitarian crises during our trying period of insurgency,”

He said the victims of insurgency; have been provided with humanitarian interventions of various packages, including the Reconstruction, Resettlement and Rehabilitation (RRR) programmes.

His words: “We were assisted by the Red Cross in resettling most of the IDPs in their respective communities.

“The training and empowerment of our youths, be prioritized by the Committee to restore and sustain their means of livelihoods.”

According to him, top most priority be accorded to the socio-economic stability and sustenance of livelihoods.

 

In his brief remarks, the Red Cross Head of Operations, Julianne Chassamy, during the visit, said: “We’re here in Damaturu to familiarise and assess the full implementation of our projects in the state.”

He said the Committee, is particularly concerned of restoring livelihoods with the engagement of stakeholders to protect and assist the affected people, including IDPs.

 

 

 

Continued; “We’ve executed many projects especially in Kanamma, Damaturu and Buni/Yadi to complete the resettlement of IDPs.

 

He, therefore, commended the collaboration of the State government, particularly the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the State’s Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for providing humanitarian assistance.

 

The Special Assistants (SAs) on Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Dr. Abubakar Iliya and Alhaji Abdullahi Bego of Wealth Creation, Empowerment and Employment generation, appealed to the Red Cross to engage stakeholders in projects assessment and training if youths.

They noted that the youths will become self-reliant a provided sustainable solutions.
