The North East Development Commission (NEDC) in partnership with the Yobe State Government has distributed farm inputs to 1,625 farmers in seven councils of the state. The organized farmers’ groups were drawn from Gujba, Gulani, Tarmuwa, Geidam, Yunusari and Damaturu Local Government Areas.
Speaking yesterday at the distribution exercise in Damaturu, the state capital; NEDC’s representative, Dr. Ali Abbas disclosed that; “The distributed farm inputs will empower the household farmers restore their destroyed livelihoods,” adding that the distributed improved seeds could increase productivity and incomes of farmers. According to him, the distributed agricultural inputs comprise fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and improved seeds of rice, maize and sorghum. The Yobe State Commissioner of Agriculture, Dr. Mairo Amshi urged the farmers to embrace farming as business activities to restore peace in the state.
She also warned the farmers against selling the distributed farm inputs for selfish interests. She said that to actualize agricultural revolution in the state, 2,000 hectres of land has been acquired in Bursari Local Government Area. While commending President Muhammadu Buhari and the Commission, Chairman of the Association of Farmers in Nigeria (AFAN), Usman Ngaran assured that the distributed inputs will be used to improve household farmers’ productivity and living conditions.
