WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY: LAGOS ASSEMBLY SEEKS IMMEDIATE FULFILLMENT OF INCENTIVES FOR TEACHERS

Lagos State House of Assembly has commended President Muhammadu Buhari on the new salary scheme and incentives approved for teachers as a way of motivation and encouragement, and sought for immediate fulfillment of the special salary scale.

While moving the motion on the floor of the House during Plenary on Monday, Hon. Ajani Owolabi disclosed that teachers have shown great leadership, innovations and skills that have ensured learning never stopped and should therefore be taken into cognizance for their contributions in providing remote learning and building resilience in shaping the future of education and uplifting the teaching profession.

He therefore moved that the House commend His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari for the new salary scheme and other incentives announced for teachers and the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his efforts at ensuring that the welfare and responsibilities of teachers in Lagos State are adequately considered; as well as congratulate the Chairman, Nigerian Union of Teacher Chairman, NUT, in the federation and Lagos State Chapter including all teachers in the State on the occasion of Y2020 World Teachers’ Day celebration.

Hon. Oluyinka Ogundinmu, Chairman, House Committee on Education noted that the efforts of teachers in Lagos State cannot be over-emphasised and the area of their welfare should be acted on immediately.

Hon. Rotimi Olowo stated that teachers should be treated specially in their efforts at ensuring inclusive equitable quality education in the country.

Adding his voice to the motion, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade said teachers should be celebrated and appreciated, in order to encourage them to do more for the State and country.

Subsequently, the Speaker advocated that incentives such as housing, official cars amongst others that are being enjoyed by other professionals should be equally benefitted by the teachers.

The House unanimously agreed on the motion and the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Obasa thereafter directed the Ag. Clerk of the House, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko to send a copy of the resolution to appropriate agencies.
