ICRC RENDERS HUMANE TREATMENTS TO 4, 800 DETAINEES IN NORTHEAST

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has rendered humane treatments to no less than 4, 800 detainees in the Northeast region.

The region affected by the 13-year conflict comprised Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

ICRC Head of Delegation in Nigeria, Yann Bonzon, disclosed this in the 2022 Operational Facts and Figures dashboard; released yesterday (Thursday) to journalists in Maiduguri, Borno state.

He said that the detainees were individually followed up by the Committee through 32 visits to nine detention centres in the three conflict affected States.

“The visits were to conduct and monitor the treatments and conditions of the detainees in their respective centres,” said the ICRC dashboard.

Bonzon added that 317 detainees in relation to the over a decade conflict; were registered by the Committee including the minors and women.

He noted that food distribution continued in two detention facilities with the provisions of food supplements and drugs to four other detention centres.

Unveiling the means of access to treatments, the Dashboard stated: “The ICRC received 6, 198 phone calls from communities relating to health, water and sanitation and family separation.

“The needs for shelter were also handled by the Committee.”

According to the ICRC Head of Delegation, 300 people from the affected communities with temporary shelters and surgical patients were discharged from State’s Specialists Hospital, Maiduguri.

On the detainees’ state of health, he said: “We engaged the detainees with capacity-building training for their health and catering officers,” assuring that the ICRC will continue to support detaining authorities by improving detainees’ access to healthcare.

Meanwhile, about 7, 636 detainees have benefitted from collective and individual hygiene items distributed every three months in 10 detention centres.
