LAGOS ASSEMBLY CONSIDERS FIFTH ALTERATION BILL OF THE 1999 CONSTITUTION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

Lagos Assembly Lawmakers during plenary on Thursday put into consideration for approval of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) (Fifth Alteration) Bill, 2022 forwarded by the Clerk to the National Assembly.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa stated that there has always been alterations and amendments of the Constitution since its commencement in 1999 and most of these alterations have failed to meet the yearnings and needs of the people.

“The current Constitution depicts without consideration and interest of the people, I believe there should be more in terms of economic progress and political interest in the State. The current 9th Assembly in the National Assembly has done much better than the previous Assembly by getting involved in evolution of power to the component unit, that is, State, where issues are considered and power is given to the State to also exercise influence upon.”

The transmitted alteration from the National Assembly has 44 alterations and it is left for us to play our role as required by the 1999 Constitution as amended. While we wait on other House of Assemblies to follow suit in order to achieve the purpose of this alteration. He stated.

Lawmakers took turns to deliberate on section 66 of the Bill then rejected sections (1), (2), (26), (27), (52), (66).

Commending the Speaker for championing training, the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade explained that the segments of the bills they approved off is a product of the fact that in respect of the alteration, Lawmakers have been exposed to workshops and conferences to strengthen the understanding which facilitated the quick passage with a bit of the less areas they cited.

“Pursuant to Section 9(2) of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended considers fifth alteration bills to enable us forward our approval by resolution on the 1999 Constitution to the Clerk of the House.”

The Speaker directed the Clerk of the House Barr. Olalekan Onafeko to forward the approval by resolution of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Fifth Alteration) Bill to the Clerk of the National Assembly including reasons for the positions the House has taken in respect of the individual bills.
