The National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), Kaduna is to train over 18,000 unqualified teachers in the Northeast region of the country. The unqualified teachers are drawn from the Boko Haram insurgency affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY). Announcing the training Wednesday at the Maiduguri UNICEF Office, the Director General of NTI, Prof. Musa Garba Maitafsir disclosed: “Our institute is ready to ensure the training of 18. 367 unqualified teachers in the insurgency affected states,” lamenting that over 270 teachers were killed during the 12-year insurgency. “We’re willing and committed in the training of unqualified teachers,” he said, as UNICEF has contracted the Institute to train the teachers in the BAY states. While responding to teachers’ training, UNICEF’s Education Specialist, Dr. Yusuf Ismail advised the Director General to promote the image of the Institute in the training and re-training of teachers.
He noted that education is the bedrock of any developing nation across the globe. Maifafsir also commended the Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, (UNIMAID), Prof. Aliyu Shugaba for affiliating the Institute to the varsity.
