The North East Development Commission (NEDC) is to upgrade coronavirus (COVID-19) laboratory facilities to disease-testing centres. The commission has already donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), hospital beds, ventilators and ambulances to six state governments and tertiary health institutions in northeast. NEDC’s Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali unfolded the plan Tuesday in Maiduguri, while launching the Rapid Response Intervention (RRI) scheme of commission.
“We’re presently witnessing the second wave of the disease,” he said, noting that all hands must be on deck to contain further spread of disease into 18 senatorial districts in the Northeast region. According to him, NEDC is not relenting in taking relevant proactive measures to prevent further spread of COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re hereby donating some items to boost personal protection against COVID-19 pandemic.
While distributing the items, he said: “Over 40,000 face masks were distributed to public and private schools, security agencies and National Union of Roads Transport Workers (NURTW). Other distributed COVID-19 items include 2,000 packs of hand sanitizers, 100 infrared thermometers to primary schools, 7,000 packs of antiseptic soap and 500 packs of wound gel for clinics and IDP camps. He said 500 packs of Bio Nursing Gynaecogical Gel IDP maternity clinics across the six states. End.
