Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum has donated 50 units of
one-bedroom semi-detached houses to staff of University of Maiduguri
(UNIMAID).
Commissioning the completed houses Friday at varsity campus, he said
that the State Government will intervene to liaise with a Micro
Finance Bank (MIFB) for staff own their houses.
“Besides donating these houses to the University, staffers are to pay
install mentally through their salaries on an owner occupier housing
scheme,” he said.
The Governor, who was a former staff of UNIMAID Faculty of Engineering
also pledged to build a befitting structure for the faculty.
He said the Department of Civil Engineering; which could not meet its
accreditation programme, will be assisted with N100 million worth of
engineering teaching equipment.
“With today’s (Friday) donation of houses to staff, I also promised
that portable water requirements of varsity, is to be met,” he said.
He continued; “If there is need for additional boreholes in the
University; we will provide as well as places of worship in hostel and
staff quarters.
He therefore, called for an amicable solution to the lingering
Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) strike.
He also expressed his commitment to help in the effort to resolve the
nation-wide nine-month teachers’ strike.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba, who thanked the governor for
his sustained support to University described Zulum as a worthy
Ambassador as an alumnus and staff of varsity.
He said the intervention of state government in the critical area of
housing facing the institution would impact positively on to the
University community.
Shugaba noted that since the assumption of Zulum, as Governor, he had
intervened in various areas, particularly in the supply of portable
water to students’ hostels and staff quarters.
He added that Zulum had also intervened in providing teaching and
research tools; as well as the rehabilitation of mechanical workshop
of varsity.
“All of these projects donated to the University by his Excellency;
was not at our requests,” he noted, adding that he has chosen to
assist, because he cares for education, as he is part of the
University community
