The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF); has rescued 12 hostages
held by suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State of West African
Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Lake Chad region.
Confirming the rescues on Saturday at N’djamena, Chad, the Taskforce
Spokesman, Col. Mohammed Dole disclosed; that the captives were
rescued in an ambush of terrorists in their various enclaves.
According to him, MNJF has continued to unleash ‘battle heat’ to exact
more pressure on terrorists hibernating on fringes of lake and
bordering neighbouring countries of Niger, Chad, Nigeria and Cameroon.
On the rescue of captives, he said: “Acting on credible information on
the intended relocation of the insurgents to another location, troops
of Sector 2 (Chad), of taskforce laid an ambush against the insurgents
near Barkalam fishing community.
“During the offensive operation, three canoes were capsized leading to
the death and arrest of some terrorists,” adding that several of them
sustained various degree of injuries and fled with gunshot wounds.
He said in the aftermath of encounter, 12 hostages were successfully
rescued from captivities.
According to him, the rescued persons, comprise a male, three women
and eight children.
He noted that in line with policy of safe transfer of surrendered
insurgents and rescued captives, they were airlifted from Baga Sola to
N’Djamena for profiling and treatments.
The Chadian Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Lt-Gen. Abakar Abdelkarim
Daoud urged the troops to remain focus and resolute to rid of
insurgency, so as to restore socioeconomic activities in the region.
The rescued persons were also moved to a military medical facility for
further examinations and medication, before reuniting them with their
families.
