The Borno state chapter of Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), has
commended Prof. Babagana Zulum to conduct elections in 27 Local
Government Areas.
Elections into the councils, were last held 13 years after, with
appointments of Caretaker Committee members for six months’ tenure.
While commending the Governor Thursday in Maiduguri, IPAC’s Secretary,
Alhaji Abba Modu disclosed that for over 13, people have been
waiting for the conduct of elections in over two dozen LGAs.
“Instead of conducting a credible elections, Caretaker Committee
Chairmen, are appointed for six month tenure;” adding that committee
members’ tenures; are however renewed by the former Governor, Sen.
Kashim Shettima for about eight years.
“Therefore, the present administration in the state must be commended
and appreciated for its readiness conduct council elections,” he said.
He also appreciated the Borno Independence Electoral Commission
(BOSEIC), on its level of preparedness to conduct elections.
He said about 75% of political parties have conducted their primary
elections; as scheduled by the electoral commission.
The Guardian also learnt that council elections, were last held in
April, 2007 during Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff’s administration.
The continued suspension of council elections, were attributed to Boko
Haram insurgency that commenced in July, 2009 with the destruction of
many lives and property in 22 LGAs.
According to him, the council elections, has been slated for Saturday,
November 28. 2020.
He added that modalities have also been put in place; with a time
table for the implementation of electoral processes.
