Yobe resorts to teaching through radio during COVID-19 crisis

The Yobe state governor has resorted to ‘radio and social media
teaching’ in Senior Secondary Schools; after one week closures over
COVID-19 pandemic that claimed over 67, 000 lives globally.
Announcing the resort on Monday to teach through radio in Damaturu,
the state capital, the Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education,
Dr. Muhammad Sani disclosed that the Ministry has concluded
arrangements to conduct extra lessons for senior secondary school
students.
According to him, the extra lessons during coronavirus lock down were
to prepare students for this year’s WAEC and NECO examinations.
He said that the students will receive teaching through Yobe
Broadcasting Corporation (YBC), Facebook Streaming and WhatsApp
platforms, which most the teachers have to continue teaching during
the COVID-19 crisis.
“Our schools were closed down following the report of a corona virus
pandemic in Nigeria with a view to avoid the spread of the disease
among students, teachers among other academic and non-academic staff
across the state,” he said.
He further disclosed that the extra lessons will be on English,
Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
Continued: “Similarly subjects such as Biology, Information and
Communication Technology (ICT), Economics and Government will also be
taught during the extra lesson.”
He therefore urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children
and wards take advantage of the initiative by listening to the
programme.
According to him, the radio teaching programme by aired on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays with the overall
objective of recording excellent results on WAEC and NECO
examinations.
The Ministry has fixed Tuesday April 7, 2020 for the commencement of
the lessons on radio, adding that teachers had been trained on extra
lessons in solving question papers of WEAC of the past ten years.
