Buni Pardons Six Inmates To Mark New Year In Yobe

Governor Maimala Buni of Yobe state; has pardoned six prison inmates to mark the commencement of the New Year. The inmates were convicted for various offences and serving their jail terms at the Medium Security Prison, Gashua. Commissioner of Information, Abdullahi Bego Thursday in Damaturu, stated that the pardons are part of Buni’s 2020 good will messages to the people. “The inmates are being released immediately and to be reunited with their families,” he said. According to him, 2020 will be a year of ‘renewals for an accelerated’ socioeconomic progress and development in the state. While reflecting on last year, Buni said: “It was full of opportunities and trials for the state but I expressed gratitude to God for the recorded successes in the state.”

He also commended the people of the state for their resilience, including security agencies’ hard work to protect people’s lives and property. His words: “The governor urged the people to continue to partner with the security agencies to ensure a peace that lasts across the state. On identity of inmates, he said: “They are Isa Mohammed, who was jailed for a year and six months and serving his time at the Potiskum Medium Security Prison. “Isa Haruna was also convicted and sentenced to a year and half had been serving a jail term in Potiskum. “While Umar Ibrahim; was convicted and sentenced to three years was also released from and Gashua Prison.”

He said that other released inmates, include Manu Dari, Adamu Bello and Adamu Jauro that had served for about three years jail terms. “The governor granted the pardons to exercise his Prerogative of Mercy as conferred on him by Section 212 (1) of the 1999 Constitution,” he said. He added that it was also based on the advice of the Prerogative of Mercy Advisory Council.
