OVER 1.2 MILLION PEOPLE NEED HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE IN BORNO, YOBE

The Civil Society Network (CSN) of the Lake Chad Basin; has said 1.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in Borno, Adamawa andYobe states. The insurgency affected region, is one of the most severe across the globe. It’s Regional Director of Mobilization, Ibrahim Yusuf disclosed this Thursday at Northeast Peace and Security Summit in Maiduguri, to mark 2019 International Peace Day with theme: “Climate Action for Peace.”

According to him; “Out of 1.2 million people that needed humanitarian assistance, 52 per cent are women and girls, while 48 per cent are men and boys. He said that vast areas of Borno state; are currently under the control of Boko Haram insurgents. He said the controlled parts of the state, comprise Marte and Abadam Local Government Areas. “The escort of travelers and other commuters in convoys are no more carried out by the Army, because of being attacked by insurgents” he said.

Its Regional Coordinator, Amb. Ahmed Shehu, said that the International Peace Day was to strengthen the ideals of peace within and among all nations and peoples. He said this will draw the attention to importance of combatting climate change as a way to protect and promote peace throughout the globe.” According to him, climate change causes threats to international peace and security. He said natural disasters displace three times as many people as conflicts, forcing millions to leave their homes and seek for safety. “The growing tensions over resources and mass movements of people are affecting every country on every continent,” he warned.
