BORNO POLICE WARN POLITICIANS AGAINST USE OF WEAPONS AT RALLIES, MEETINGS

The Borno state police commissioner, Damian Chukwu has warned politicians against use of weapons during campaign rallies and meetings in the state. Chukwu read the riot act in a release statement of police command spokesman, Edet Okon on Thursday in Maiduguri. He warned politicians and their supporters to shun “violence and politics of rancor’ for peace and security to reign. According to Chukwu in the statement; “It has been observed with dismay the violent disposition of supporters of the various political aspirants during political outings and other meetings within the state.” He attributed violent conducts to include thuggery, possession and brandishing of dangerous weapons like knives, cutlasses, bows and arrows, broken bottles as well as hate speeches at campaign rallies and meetings. He further disclosed that blocking of access roads; are not only capable of causing breach of public peace, but are also inimical to the peaceful and successful conduct of electioneering campaign activities across the state. While warning people involved; in the contravention of the provisions of Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) to desist forthwith or face the wrath of law. “The command and other security agencies will not fold hands and watch unscrupulous elements jeopardize the evolving restoration of peace and security of the state,” he warned. He called on politicians in the state to play politics by its rules and in accordance with the Electoral Act and 1999 constitution. End.
