NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS AFRICA , PAID A COURTESY CALL TO THE BRITISH DEPUTY HIGH COMMISSION , LAGOS

The Secretary General, Olayinka Solomon and members of National Model United Nations Africa, paid a courtesy call to the British Deputy High Commission, Lagos where we met with Mr. Wale Adebajo, Political Adviser of the Commission, to exchange ideas on ways of strengthening the relationship between NMUN Africa and the commission. The Secretary General expressed his appreciation for the support the British High Commission has been given to us for quite some time now.

Discussions centered around three key cross-cutting issues: (i) Nigeria’s leadership in the Sustainable Development Goals, (ii) The #NotTooYoungToRun Bill, and (iii) Gender equality and women’s political participation.

On Sustainable Development, Sec-Gen, Mr Olayinka and his team highlighted the role the commission could play in SDGs implementation. Premium was placed on the need for Nigeria to prioritize its SDG targets to ensure maximum accomplishment and impact.

On the The Not Too Young To Run bill, Mr Wale, commended the efforts of the promoters of the bill and the youths of Nigeria, he stressed the fact that it is high time young people get into governance.

Mr Wale underlined commission’s eagerness to promote gender equality and to encourage female participation in the political sphere. He emphasized the need for organizations to support programmes that encourage women to get politically engaged, to expose them to political decision-making and ensure the empowerment of women.

Closing the meeting, NMUN Africa expressed their commitment to continue her work to improve democratic accountability, working with the young people, and would be diplomats from the continents in achieving world peace, stability and development in Nigeria and Africa at large
