INSURGENTS TORCH YOBE COMMUNITY, RESIDENTS FLEE FOR SAFETY

Date:

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists; in a convoy of gunship trucks and motorcycles attacked Buni/Gari community in Yobe state; torching several houses and public buildings on Sunday evening. Even though lives were not lost, residents, comprising women and children had to flee to neighbouring community of Buni/Yadi for safety. The community had been attacked severally by Boko Haram insurgents, before they were returned by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) early last year. Confirming the attack, Yakubu Audu, a fled resident said: “The Sunday attack was a reprisal one; in which Boko Haram insurgents were killed by members of vigilante group that keeps vigil on our community. “At about 6:50pm yesterday, Boko Haram terrorists in their numbers invaded Buni-Gari town of Yobe State and started shooting sporadically while residents of the village ran for safety into the bush and Buni/Yadi.” In a telephone interview on Monday in Damaturu, two residents told The Guardian that there is a military post at Buni-Gari; but the soldiers had relocated to Buni-Yadi; after last month’s attack on their location. “There was no soldier at the post, when the insurgents commenced torching our houses that Sunday evening. We had flee for safety and run to the nearest town of Buni/Yadi,” said one of the residents. He said that a group of vigilante had to intervene and confront the terrorists, while the soldiers of 27 Task Force tactically withdrew to the nearest town of Buni/Yadi. “This is the third time Boko Haram is coming to the town in less than a month.  No action was taken by the military to ensure our safety and community,” said Ahmadu Isa. Hamman Musa also said that the insurgents came in a large number to torch a military base, including billboards of politicians in the community.
