The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali has inaugurated the Area Command office and a barrack at Beneshiek for effective policing in Borno state.
According to him, other commissioned projects comprise the renovations of administrative office and staff quarters of the Police College, Maiduguri.
Unveiling the projects, yesterday (Sunday), in Beneshiek town, Alkali disclosed: “These projects and the renovated ones are for the policemen to improve their working environment in various communities in the state,” noting that a conducive retirement abodes are to be provided for the policemen.
He, therefore, urged the Beneshiek Community to own and protect the inaugurated police projects for effective and efficient policing to protect people’s lives and property.
Continued: “This is the essence of providing accommodation close to the police stations,” noting that members of the police community relations committee (PCRC) should not get tired of community policing.
The police boss urged the policemen to imbibe the culture of maintenance, as it has become the greatest challenge of sustaining police facilities and structures across the country.
According to him, cleanliness is next to godliness, hygiene and welfare of the policemen and communities they serve.
On community policing, he noted that it has been misused and misunderstood by the general public.
“The actual thing we are saying is that we need sons and daughters of any community that are employed and have time to partner with the police in keeping their environments policed.
He said that policing is not only the job of policemen, but a collective responsibility of all.
“Community policing is aimed at identifying the nooks and crannies of the various communities the PCRC serve,” he said, adding that the committees should partner with police to protect lives and property.
Citing the Civilian JTF, he said that its members are a remarkable force that is emulated by other states in the country.
He noted that it is important to engage volunteers who are living in the communities to be policed.
He, therefore, warned that failure to know communities’ attributes could, however, led to poor policing in protecting people’s lives and property.
While commissioning other projects at the Police College, Maiduguri, he disclosed that the 10,000 recruits at the college are to be posted to their Local Government Areas (LGAs) after their training by the end of this year.
