The Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has approved the provision of relief materials and monetary assistance to some members of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) that were robbed recently at the corpers lodge in Uyo.
The good news of the succour was revealed to them by the State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Sir Monday Uko, when he paid a visit to the lodge for on-the-spot assessment of the situation. He said his visit was at the instance of the governor, who was pained by the ugly development and directed him to visit and provide succour and all necessary assistance to the affected NYSC members.
The commissioner who described the robbery as callous and unacceptable, assured that the security agencies were investigating the incident to ensure that the culprits were apprehended and brought to book.
The State NYSC Coordinator Mrs. Chinyere Ekwe who was at hand to receive the commissioner and his team thanked the governor for the kind gesture in offering assistance to the Corpers , assured that they will receive the package from the governor to alleviate their distress.
The NYSC Coordinator used the opportunity to debunked the speculations that went round that the female corpers at the lodge were hurt and raped by the armed robbers. According to her, the report was false as founded as to her knowledged, none of the female corp members. She said when the incident got to her knowledged, she went to the lodge in company of the State Commissioner of Police Mr Olatoye Durosinmi whereby she confirmed that they were neither hurt nor rape. She also commended the security agencies for their prompt response to the distress call which led to the robbers fleeing the scene.
Responding on behalf of the 21 NYSC members that reside in the Corpers lodge located at Ekong Ekwere Street off Information Drive where the State Secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalist, NUJ is situated, Richard Igbokwe, Uzoma Udehand Akilachi Charles commended the governor for providing to them he needed assistance to mitigate their losses. They described the governor as a father of all and equally affirmed that the robbers did not hurt any of them or rape any during their operation.
The robbers were reported to have stormed the NYSC lodge by 1am and robbed them of their valuables like, phones, laptops and cash
