Hon. Abdulkadir Rahis has said that legislators’ redemption of electioneering campaign pledges and peaceful co-existence of people ensure their return for representation at the National Assembly.
Rahis, representing Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) federal constituency in Borno State, disclosed this, yesterday (Tuesday) in Maiduguri, in an interactive session with journalists.
He said that the wealth and other acquired assets during politicking could be retained for life.
According to him, the retention could also be sustained, as long as legislators live in peace with the people they represent at the Assembly.
Besides, he added: “The peaceful co-existence with constituents can return you unopposed to represent them for several terms at the National Assembly.”
He attributed his being unopposed at the primary elections to Stakeholders and God’s will, while representing the people for the third term.
He said that this enabled him to clinch the ticket to contest and return to represent the people on issues that affect their lives and other wellbeing.
On how people continue to return legislators, he said: “I started politics at the ward level on the platform of United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP).
“I was also a youth leader for the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) and All People’s Party (APP) with the representation of people at the national level for three terms.”
Continuing, he explained: “I grew up in politics, as I’ve no other business than politicking,” stating that he does not buy and sell anything; other than effective representation of the people of MMC.
He warned that when people do not trust you, they will not support and return you to represent them at the National Assembly.
According to him, the constituents always weigh what they have provided to improve their living conditions before re-electing legislators to continue to represent them.
Meanwhile, he said that the priority was to reduce poverty and unemployment among youths that constitute 60 per cent of the population of Maiduguri metropolis.
Other constituency projects that were completed include the drilling of over 100 boreholes, installation of solar-powered streetlights in several local council wards with provision of scholarships to 300 students.
He added that over a dozen schools were also built and furnished, including other constituency projects that touched the lives of people in 15 wards.
He noted that this year more projects will be sited to add more dividends of democracy with effective representation of the people.
