The Federal Government has sought a policy framework to fight corruption and other financial crimes in Nigeria.
The Whistle Blowing Policy (WBLP) was to strengthen the fight against financial crimes by rewarding whistle blowers across the country.
Declaring the Northeast whistle blowing Conference, yesterday (Tuesday), in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, the Minister of Finance and National Planning, represented by Aliyu Abubakar, disclosed: “The legal framework is one of the major factors affecting the efficacy and the country’s WBLP,”
He said that the responsibilities are bestowed on the Presidential Initiatives on Continuous Audit (PICA) to develop and implement the policy to fight against corruption and other financial crimes.
According to him, the implementation of WBLP could reveal more information on financial crimes and reward of whistle blowers.
The Conference themed: “Implementation of the Whistle Blower Policy in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Way Forward,” was as result of President Muhammadu Buhari administration to vigorously bring corruption to a halt.
He noted that Governor Babagana Zulum and other security agencies’ efforts to restore peace has enabled delegates of political parties conduct their primaries in the region.
He said that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU and the office of the Attorney General of the federation were represented at the Conference.
