Yobe Targets Over 64,000 People For COVID-19 Vaccination Exercise

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, has flagged off the massive vaccination of people above 18 against COVID-19 pandemic across the state.

While inaugurating vaccination campaigns at the weekend (Friday) in Damaturu; he said that the Federal Government exercise through the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHDA) is to increase the number of people being vaccinated against the life threatening virus.

Buni, represented by his deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, who doubles as the Committee Chairman on prevention and control of COVID-19, said: “Today’s event was part of the bold step taken by the Federal Government against the pandemic that claimed 2,980 lives in Nigeria with 5.3 million globally.”

Represented by his deputy Idi Barde Gubana who is the State Committee Chairman on prevention and control of covid-19, noted that the event was part of the bold national steps taken by the Federal Government.

Gubana lamented that the spread of COVID-19 pandemic has been generating a lot of concern globally with response to its fatal attacks on the populace.

“This informed the state government to immediately inaugurate the State Task Force on COVID-19,” he said, stating that medical consumables were also procured with the establishment of a testing center at the State’s Specialist Hospital, Damaturu.

He added that four isolation centers in Damaturu, Potiskum and Geidam Local Government Areas were built to attain hospitalized patients. “Similarly, we’ve trained medical personnel and procured two brand new Hilux to strengthen surveillance and risk communication activities,” he said, adding that a functional health facility is being provided in each of the 178 wards in the state. According to him, COVID-19 vaccination is one of the powerful tools that will bring the pandemic under control.

The Commissioner of Health and Human Resources, Dr. Mohammed Lawan Gana, disclosed that as on December 8, 2021 over 64,000 eligible people above18; were vaccinated with either Moderna or Astra-Zeneca vaccines across the state. He explained that the World Health Organization (WHO) recently recommended that all countries should vaccinate not less than 50% of their population by December this year. He noted that the measures were to curb further spread of the pandemic in communities and cities across the country.
