LAGOS ASSEMBLY EXTENDS PENALTY FINES ON FIRE CODE OFFENDERS; ADOPTS COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS

Date:

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have adopted the recommendations of the House Committee on Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations in respect to a Bill for a Law to establish the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and for other connected purposes on Tuesday. The House, based on the amendments of the report presented by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Raheem Kazeem Adewale, further extended the penalty fines on fire code offenders, based on the catastrophic impact incurred during the obstruction experienced in the course of duty.
Majority Leader, Hon. SOB Agunbiade supported that the penalty fines suggested in the bill, is a pat on the offenders back considering the effect of the offenders in terms of loss of lives and properties. Lending his voice, Chairman, House Committee on Information, Security & Strategy, Hon. (Engr.) David Setonji noted that the establishment of Fire and Training Academy will be a consequence to the State budget, as there are many agencies in incubation stage, such as Law Enforcement Training Institute, LETI which has just been supported by the House.
He added that Fire Training is an extension of security and the curriculum should therefore be incorporated into LETI upon its establishment. Hon. Sanni Okanlawon applauded the bill for having the provision of fire prevention, repression and rescue, in its life saving purpose. Hon. Richard Kasunmu also submitted that the creation of State Fire Service Units should be in close proximity to public establishment such as schools, hospitals and fueling stations as they are of public interest. Subsequently, subject to the amendments proposed by the Members after deliberations, the House adopted the recommendations of the Committee as the resolutions of the House.
