LAGOS ASSEMBLY DELIBERATES ON DATA PROTECTION BILL, 2021

*ADOPTS REPORT ON LEGISLATIVE INSTITUTION BILL, 2020
In a bid to protect personal information data processed by public and private bodies, the Lagos State House of Assembly read for the second time, “A Bill for a Law to promote the protection of personal information processed by public and private bodies, establish minimum requirements for the processing and protection of personal information, establish the Data Protection Commission and for other connected purposes.” The Bill is set to protect data information collated in the State and create easy access for data processing when needed. According to Hon. Olanrewaju Afinni, the Bill stands to protect data information collated in the State and will create easy access for data processing when needed. Deliberating on the Bill, Hon. Abiodun Tobun, noted that the Bill will help advance technology in the State. He said, “This Bill, if passed into Law will save up a lot of time wasted when people collate information from all quarters. It will prevent fraud and also help in prevent personal information leakage without owners’ consent.”
Hon. Kehinde Joseph stated that as the Bill connotes, it has a lot to do with data protection. He positioned that, “The Bill is well arranged and explains how data protection is important especially in the 21st century and in respect of the cyber crimes the country is facing.” He added that the Bill is set to reduce cyber crime, protect and secure informations of citizens. “Another good part of the Bill is that data cannot be released to anyone without your consent. The revenue part of it is secondary, as it’s government’s responsibility to protect lives and properties.” Hon. Kehinde submitted.
Contributing, Hon. Femi Saheed stated that, “The Bill when enacted will ensure that both private and public sector data is adequately protected. It will help reduce cyber crime activities that is ravaging our economy, especially in Lagos State.” Hon. Richard Kasumu opined that the Bill seeks to minimize the effect of the misuse and abuse of personal data as well as establish an impartial regulatory body to ensure that personal data of people is actually protected in a fair and lawful manner.  The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Obasa, thereafter committed the Bill to the House Committee on Science and Technology to report it’s findings in two weeks.
In another development, Following the presentation of the findings and recommendations of the report of the Joint Committees on Education on the Lagos State Legislative and Research Institute Bill, 2020 by Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman, House Committee on Education (Ministry); the House deliberated that subject to the reviews made by the Members, the recommendations of the Joint Committees was adopted as the resolutions of the House.
