COVID-19, Cholera Kill 244 People In Borno

The COVID-19 pandemic, cholera and measles have killed 244 people within 18 months in Borno state. The deaths were reported from 14, 227 cases of the three diseases in 20 Local Government Areas of the state.

These were made known yesterday (Friday) in the World Health Organisation (WHO) weekly snap shots at the orientation workshop for journalists in Maiduguri titled: “Overview of COVID-19, cholera, cVDPV2 in Borno.” “Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in April, 2020 at Pulka; the epidemiological updates on the ongoing outbreaks of COVID-19 killed 38 people in the state,” said Dr. Danladi Ndahi, while presenting an overview on the corona virus disease in the state. He explained that out of the 22,065 cases, there were 1, 363 confirmed cases with 6.2 percent case positivity rate. “The case fatality rate (CFR) also stood at 2.8 percent,” he said.

In a breakdown of COVID-19, cholera and measles in the last 18 months in the state, he said 14, 227 cases were recorded in 13, 19 and 20 councils respectively. While speaking on CFRs, he noted that COVID-19 had the highest of 5.2%, while cholera and measles had 0.95% and 2.8% in that order. He added that 89 percent of COVID-19 confirmed cases were recorded in the Maiduguri metropolis, while Jere council took 19 percent. “Ten Local Government Areas have not reported a single case of COVID,” he noted, stating that as there was no new reporting council this week.
