Suspected Boko Haram terrorists in gun trucks attacked Babangida community in Yobe State forcing residents to flee into bushes and farmlands. The terrorists that burst from the Sasawa Forest fired several gunshots to scare and assault the fleeing residents Sunday along the Damaturu/Dapchi road.
Confirming the incident Monday in Damaturu, Isa Yakubu, a resident told The Guardian that the community was caught unawares of the terrorists’ ambush on Babangida, the Council headquarters of Tarmuwa. “I had to flee along with family members to the bush yesterday evening,” he said, warning that taking safety in houses could lead to killing all of us.” Besides, the insurgents after attacking communities, they also destroyed telecom masts and power lines with explosives in Borno and Yobe states. He noted that the fierce gun battle between the terrorists and soldiers lasted for over an hour, before they were repelled towards the forest. According to him, the troops however; recovered a gun truck, while the terrorists fled with three other gun trucks towards the forest.
Besides, the insurgents after attacking communities in Borno and Yobe states, they also destroyed telecom masts and power lines with explosives. Babangida, 50 kilometres north of Damaturu; the state capital, was attacked on August 25, 2021, killing a soldier and three civilians. In spite of these attacks, the Federal Government and security agencies claim that they have recorded successes in fighting the terror group, including the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) operating in the Lake Chad Basin and Sambisa Forest.
“Due to our sustained onslaught on terrorists, they now surrender to embrace amnesty,” said Brig-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Army Spokesman. He noted that the terrorists’ chief bomb expert, Musa Adamu and his lieutenant, Usman Adamu along with other members and families have surrendered to the Army in Bama council of Borno state. According to him, due to sustained onslaughts from troops, 335 fighters, 746 women and children have surrendered to embrace amnesty.
