The leader of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) leader, Abu Musab Al-Barnawi has been killed in Borno state.
According to independently unconfirmed reports, Al-Barnawi was slain last week August, 2021 on the shores of Lake Chad. He was the son of the founder of Boko Haram terror group, Mohammed Yusuf. Yusuf was however; killed by the police after he was captured and handed over by the military on July 31, 2009 in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.
ISWAP therefore announced Al-Barnawi as its new leader, while Abubakar Shekau took over the leadership of Boko Haram after Yusuf’s death. Before his dethronement, Shekau had sworn allegiance to IS in March 2015 and had killed thousands of people with the destruction of many communities in the Northeast. Shekau’s reign of terror also extended to Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the torching of UN buildings on August 21, 2011.
