No less than four persons were killed in Yobe state, following an outbreak of cholera in Jakusko Local Government Area. While confirming the death toll Thursday in Damaturu, the state capital, the Executive Secretary, State’s Primary Health Care Management Board, Dr. Babagana Kundi, disclosed that a rapid response team has been raised to prevent further spread of disease to other parts of the state.” He said the situation is under control by sensitizing residents and other stakeholders to adhere to strict personal hygiene, including boiling of water before drinking.
He added that two people are hospitalized and receiving treatment before they are discharged. On preventative measures, he said: “I spoke with the primary health care coordinator in the area and directed him to begin decontamination of the area.” The Council Chairman of Jakusko, Abdullahi Hassan Gwayo, also directed community health workers to take drastic action to prevent further spread of water borne disease to other council areas. He urged the residents to strictly adhere to preventative measures, including personal hygiene and open defecation that contaminates water points and streams.
