Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state; has flagged off the rehabilitation of 66-kilometre Maiduguri/Bama road to Cameroon and Central Africa Republic (CAR). According to him; the 50 kilometre road project is funded by the World Bank Muti-sectoral Crisis Recovery Programme (MCRP) at N5 billion. While an additional funding from the Minister of Works has been released to supplement the funding gap of N1 billion.
“This road project will cost N6 billion and be completed within the shortest possible time,” he said; noting that the 121-kilometre Maiduguri/Bama/Banki road would also link Cameroon and CAR. He added that Spectrum Engineering firm will work in tandem with Borno State Roads Maintenance Agency (BORMA) to ensure completion of the project. While briefing the Governor on the state of the road, the Commissioner of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (RRR), Mustapha Gubio said: “This road was first constructed in 1954 by the Federal Government.
“It was also given a facelift in 1978. Since then there have been no major repairs that have taken place.
“Today we are going to witness a new face-lift with complete reconstruction of 66-kilometre Maiduguri/Bama road.” According to him, after completing the road, it would increase socio economic activities of communities.
He noted that 98 structures of 374 people have been affected by the rehabilitation of the road project. He said the state government released N11 million as compensation to 374 people, where their livelihood activities are affected by road rehabilitation. He therefore urged the construction firm to adhere to all technical specifications and supported engineers of RRR, Ministry of Works and World Bank MCRP.
