The Yobe state government has completed over 123.3 kilometres of Township and Ring roads across the state in 2020. The completion of roads, are to link various communities in evacuating millions of tons of farm produce and livestock to grains silos and markets. While announcing the score card for completed roads projects in 2020 at the weekend in Damaturu, the Commissioner of Information, Abdullahi Bego disclosed that; “The 2020 is a roller-coaster of a year, a year of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and global economic recession. “Yobe State has made some major progress but was held back by equally major challenges. “Governor Mai Mala Buni has, however, implemented its socio-economic agenda for the people,” noting that the budget performance for last year stood at 95%. According to him, the completion of road projects could also reduce market prices, as the costs of transporting products are reduced with efficient roads network and other infrastructural facilities. He said the 4.5 kilometre dual carriageway from Abattoir to the new Potiskum bypass road was completed last year. He added that the rehabilitation of township roads in Potiskum and Gashu’a including the 55 kilometre Katarko/Goniri road are motorable. While the repairs of damaged areas and refilling of potholes along Jajimaji/Karasuwa road were also completed last year. “There were additional repairs of flooded sections and potholes along the Damaturu and Garin Alkali/Girgir Ring roads,” he said. On whether there are abandoned projects, he said: “There is none to my own understanding. Contracts have also been awarded for the construction of flexible pavements and reinforced concrete drainage in Nguru, Gashu’a and Geidam, a border community with Niger.”
