Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni has awarded 33 health workers for containing the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs). According to him, the awards were also in recognition of their selfless service to humanity in saving many people’s lives. While presenting certificates of recognition yesterday in Damaturu, the state capital, the Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Dr. Lawan Gana commended them for their resilience in fighting COVID-19. “This is in fulfilment of the Ministry’s pledge to always reward outstanding health workers,” he said, noting it will continue to motivate them to fight other diseases. He therefore urged them to strictly adhere to COVID-19 protocols, while protecting people’s lives in the front lines. “As you’re all aware, there is a surge in COVID-19 cases at the moment. You should not be carried away by the euphoria of saving lives and thereafter; put your lives in danger,” he warned. While protecting themselves in fight against the virus, he said: “Ask questions before approaching patients, particularly those that present symptoms of coughing, fever and shortness of breath. “You should also wear the right face mask, hand gloves and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), while treating COVID-19 patients. “Members of the public, should also adopt the safety precautionary safety measures against the pandemic.” The Yobe State Specialists Hospital, Chief Medical Director, Dr. Aisha Adamu also said that none of the health workers died, throughout the pandemic in the state. She attributed it to adequate supply of PPE and strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols by the public and health workers.
