The Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA), has awarded
scholarships to 10 orphans of fallen heroes, while fighting Boko Haram
insurgency in Northeast.
NAOWA; also empowered 600 barracks women, with the commissioning of
three blocks of classrooms for the orphans.
The over a decade long insurgency; has claimed 36,000 lives with
property worth $9.2 billion (N3.42 trillion) in Borno, Adamawa and
Yobe states.
Announcing scholarships and empowerment at NAOWA Nursery and Primary
School at weekend, in Maiduguri, its President, Hajiya Halima Ibrahim
disclosed that; “We’ve awarded scholarships to 10 children of
personnel, who sacrificed their lives in cause of fighting Boko Haram
insurgents.”
She said the scholarships include payments of tuition and extra mural
fees, books and school bags.
“This also comprise complete set of student uniforms from date of
admission to graduation from school,” she said.
According to her, the association in collaboration with Borno state
government and Bank of Industry (BoI) will also empower 600 barrack
women.
She said they the association is to commence the empowerment with 200
women with takeoff capital women in first phase.
She continued; “Today we will be presenting cheques to first set of
barrack women, while the rest be presented in batches.
In his brief remarks, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7
Division, Nigerian Army, Brig-Gen. Abdul Ibrahim, who was represented
by Brig-Gen. I. Ottu said the commissioning of classroom blocks, is a
reflection of army’s commitment to education.
