Country representative of the Food and Agricultural Organisation
(FAO), Fred Kafeero; has said that the 2020 dry season farming, is to
be launched today (Thursday) to aver looming hunger and malnutrition.
According to him, FAO targeted 24,000 smallholder farmers in
insurgency affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.
In a statement Thursday in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, Kafeero
disclosed that; “Since 2016, we had supported conflict affected
farmers in northeast Nigeria with inputs for food production and
livelihood protections.”
He said that local farmers’ productive assets; have also been depleted
as a result of over a decade long Boko Haram insurgency.
He however, noted that 63.000 farmers have been given lifelines to
gradually rebuild means of livelihoods during rainy season farming.
According to him, the restoration livelihood support programme,
comprises livestock restocking, aquaculture and production of crops.
He assured that the farmers will be also be assisted with seeds of
vegetables and cereals, including wet blended fertilizers.
