INDEPENDENCE DAY 2020: LAGOS ASSEMBLY CALLS ON PRESIDENCY OVER NATION’S AGITATIONS

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Obasa has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to pay attention to the agitations of the federation concerning the issues of poverty, insecurities, and unemployment which have arisen over the course of the nation’s independence till present time.

He also commended and congratulated President Buhari on the occasion of the nation’s 60th Independence celebration on the 1st of October, 2020 as well as the National Assembly and others who have played prominent roles in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy from 1999 till date particularly, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

It would be recalled that Nigeria celebrated her 60th Independence Day on Thursday, October 1st, 2020 which led to the deliberations by Members of the House during Plenary on Monday under Matters of Urgent Public Importance moved by Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Noheem Adams.

During his submission, Hon. Noheem Adams disclosed that since her Independence in 1960, Nigeria has barely managed to rule herself efficiently or achieve political stability as there are factors that have poised some challenges to the growth of the country.

He listed that Nigeria has suffered from ethnic division, military coups, civil war and economic instability due to recent dependency on crude oil as sustenance on revenue, which has led to partial neglect to agriculture, industrialisation and advancement in technology.

Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, in his discourse, expressed that Nigeria is still struggling with growth as a lot more is expected of her, “We are consoling ourselves that Nigeria is progressing, but prosperity in Nigeria should be a massive thing. We need to look at what will give us prosperity on a massive scale.” He said.

In addition to other deliberations, Hon. Desmond Elliot congratulated all Nigerians on the milestone the country has achieved so far and their recognition of the dominance in international access especially when it comes to Africa.

“Nigeria as a country carries a lot of burden on her shoulders like issues on ethnicity, tribalism, the huge gap between the rich and the poor. Our norms, values and culture have all deteriorated. We have insufficient power supply, housing, and food and we hope today all these should not have been our issues to talk about in Nigeria; however, we are hopeful with the new year.” He maintained.

The Speaker therefore directed the acting Clerk of the House, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko to send a clear copy to Mr. Governor for conveyance to the Presidency.

In another development, a bill for a Law to establish the Lagos State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission and for connected purposes scaled through its second reading.

Subsequently, the House unanimously passed a grant approval for the request of the sums of N93, 000, 000, 000.00 (Ninety-Three Billion Naira Only) and N60, 000, 000, 000.00 (Sixty Billion Naira Only) respectively, totaling N153, 000, 000, 000.00 (One Hundred and Fifty-Three Billion Naira Only) for Lagos Rail Mass Transit, LRMT redline and blue line project financing: Differentiated Cash Reserve Requirement, DCRR CBN intervention facility.

The recommendation is the report of the Committee on Finance over the fund.
