Germany donates 6m euros for mental health, psychosocial suport of IDPs

The German Government has donated 60 million euros (about N2.7
billion) to insurgency affected countries provide mental health and
psychosocial support project to displaced persons in Lake Chad region.
The German Ambassador to Cameroon, Dr. Corinna Fricke in a statement
Thursday in Maiduguri disclosed that Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad will
benefit from the project tagged: “Emergency Response and Assistance to
Displaced Population.”
According to her; “We’re funding FCFA 3.9 billion project (6 million
EUR) to help countries in the Lake Chad Basin counter effects of Boko
Haram terrorism.”
She said that the implementation of emergency response and assistance
be carried out by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
“The Lake Chad region project focuses on Internally Displaced Persons
(IDPs),” said Dr. Fricke, adding that it will aim at distribution of
Non-Food Items and Shelter kits.
Other programmes slated for the project, include collation of data
about the movements of IDPs; as well as provide mental health and
psychosocial support to them.
She said women and children would be targeted, as they are most
vulnerable to Boko Haram attacks.
According to her, this emergency response project will reduce the
suffering of the most vulnerable population.
She noted that attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP forced about 500.000
people in Northern Cameroon, where most of them are children, to leave
their houses and their assets and belongings behind.
She explained that the new IOM project will contribute to reducing the
suffering of this particularly vulnerable population.
In 2020 Germany provided 53, 6 million EUR (35 billion FCFA) for
humanitarian activities in the Lake Chad region.
“These funds are being implemented by the UNHCR, ICRC, WFP, Plan
International and Caritas and can be flexible used depending on the
needs on the ground,” she said, noting that Germany also provided an
additional 6.7 million EUR for implementation of specific activities
in Cameroon.
