Zulum to employ 84 doctors, 510 others into Borno hospials, health centres

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum is to employ 84 doctors and
410 nurses, midwives, and pharmacists to effectively run hospitals and
health centres.
According to him, a hundred auxiliary staff, are to be recruited
supplement efforts of doctors, nurses and midwives in hospitals.
While announcing the recruitment exercise Monday at the Government
House, Maiduguri, the Governor disclosed that; “in order to provide
affordable and quality healthcare delivery to citizens of Borno state;
government has approved the appointment of 365 nurses.
“About 50% of them are retired nurses engaged on contract basis, while
the remaining half are fresh graduates of the School of Nursing and
Midwifery.”
He said in addition to this recruitment exercise, 84 doctors are to be
employed on permanent basis.
On doctors’ conditions of employment, he said: “The other doctors to
be engaged, are on contract and sabbatical basis.
“This also include the ones that will come to the state to work during
their leave of absence.”
While assuring the doctors and nurses, he said; “we’ll sustain the
provision of what we have in Borno state.”
He also approved for the establishment of a Foundation year programme
in the School of Nursing and Midwifery in Maiduguri.
Besides the recruitment of 494 doctors, nurses, midwives and
pharmacists, Zulum announced that 135 candidates be admitted into
School of Nursing and Midwifery ever year.
According to House Committee on Health, the state government has
directed School of Nursing and Midwifery to admit 200 students into
its programmes.
While speaking on schools training facilities, he said: “We shall do
everything possible to ensure the provision of basic training
facilities and equipment for students and teachers.”
He said in the next three years, about 200 nurses and midwives are to graduate.
He therefore, assured the state’s health team led by Commissioner of
Health, Dr. Salihu Kwayabura that stipends would be paid to all
students.
“We shall enter into an agreement with the students that on their
graduation; we’ll recruit them into the health sector,” he pledged.
He added that the state government will soon embark on the
construction of doctors’ and nurses’ quarters.
Continued; “We shall also increase the carrying capacity of most of
our General Hospitals,” adding that this will provide the needed
healthcare delivery services to people.
He therefore, urged Dr. Kwayabura, the health commissioner, the Health
Management Board, Director of Primary Healthcare Agency, the Chairmen
for Nurses and Midwives and Doctors Association, and the Chief of
Staff, who is also a pharmacist, Chairman, House Committee on Health,
to monitor the implementation of all programmes in health sector.
Zulum also yesterday directed the Hospital Management Board to employ
45 pharmacists and 100 supporting staff.
In his brief remarks, Dr. Kwayabura pledged to go all the way out to
ensure that quality healthcare delivery services are delivered across
the state.
He said the gap between the primary and tertiary system through the
secondary healthcare facilities are revamped.
