Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum; has returned 5,200
Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to Kauwuri community with
financial and food items support to households.
According to him, the 750 households, are supported with N50, 000 each
to enable them restore their means of livelihoods destroyed in decade
long insurgency.
Kauwuri community in Konduga Local Government Area, was torched in
2014 by Boko Haram, forcing residents to flee and took refuge at
Dalori I and II IDP camps, Maiduguri.
While announcing official return of IDPs Thursday at Kauwuri, the
Governor disclosed that; “The return and resettlement of IDPs to
Kauwuri today, was part of continued efforts of the state government
return all displaced persons to enable them pickup their lives.”
Zulum, who was represented by his deputy, Umar Kadafur said that
agrarian community would return to their farmlands and engage in
meaningful livelihood activities.
He said the state government will collaborate with humanitarian
community to support IDP returnees with empowerment.
According to him, the empowerment programme will make the returnees
self-reliant instead of relying on food stamps distributed in IDP
camps.
“We will make sure that we did not only provide you with livelihood
support but ensure that we collaborate with the security agencies to
guaranty your safety,” he assured.
He therefore, urged them to be patients and stay together to develop
their rebuilt community.
While warning returnees on social vices, he said: “As you are
returning home, I want to urge the youths to desist from any form of
social vices or other nefarious activities.
“You must be law abiding and do meaningful things that will add value
to your lives.”
The Commissioner of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement
(RRR), Mustapha Gubio said that the resettlement process; was
implemented in accordance with the humanitarian principles of
willingness, safety and dignity.
Gubio said that the Ministry also distributed assorted food and relief
items to each of the resettled households.
He said the distributed food items, include bags of rice; cooking oil,
mosquito nets, blankets, textile materials and mattresses.
The District Head of Kawuri community, Lawan Awwa thanked the Governor
for rebuilding their destroyed community, six years after being
displaced to live in camps.
He said: “We lost everything that we once prided ourselves as owners,
but we thank God for spearing our eyes for seeing this day.
“We want to thank you for building our homes, hospitals and providing
us with livelihood support of N50, 000 to each returnee households.”
