The Yobe State Executive Council (SEC); has earmarked N9.21 billion
for the construction of new roads and markets projects.
The roads projects, which cover 30 kilometres, are sited in Fika,
Nguru and Gujba Local Government Areas of the state.
While the airport and markets projects are located at Potiskum and
Gashua towns; and along Damaturu/Gashua road.
These were disclosed Wednesday by the Information Commissioner,
Abdullahi Bego, while briefing journalists on outcome of council
meeting held at Government House, Damaturu.
He said the council ratified a total of N8.98 billion and approved a
spending request of N232.8 billion for various socioeconomic
development projects,
“The total sum approved for roads, airport and market projects stood
at N9.21 billion,” he said.
Governor Mai Mala Buni, has also commended council members for their
individual and collective efforts move the state to greater economic
heights.
“The state government continue to record remarkable progress, despite
lean resources and coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic,” he said.
According to Bego, of the N9.21 billion, N1.26 billion was for the
construction of 12-kilometer double coat surface-dressed
Damagum/Gubana road.
While N1.97 billion was also earmarked for the construction of
16-kilometer Nguru-Balanguwa road in Nguru council.
“The council approved N229.97 million for the reconstruction of
damaged sections and structures of the Nguru Irrigation Scheme Phase
I,” he said.
He added the sum of N397.5 million was also approved for building of
1.5 kilometere road linking Mallummatari/Gujba road dual carriageway,
Damaturu.
He said other capital expenditure ratified by the council include
N329.33 million for the supply of project vehicles, customized
tricycle ambulances, kits and bags, HIV rapid test kits, and
rehabilitation of midwife quarters at Primary Health Care Center (PHC)
Ashekeri, Geidam.
While speaking on markets project, he said: “The construction of
Gashua modern market will also gulp N2.36 billion.
“While the completion of Potiskum modern market, has been earmarked
N1.65 billion,” adding that this include the construction of a link
road and watch tower of the Yobe International Cargo Airport.
He said the council also approved N232.8 million for the extension of
electricity to the Damaturu airport, including the rehabilitation of
the 33KVA ITC line from Damaturu to Kalallawa Town with power
transformers.
