Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday showered encomium on the Management, Staff and Students of the Lagos State University, LASU on the latest ranking as the 2nd best university in Nigeria, 11th in Africa and 548th in the world university by Times Higher Education (THE) World Ranking 2021.
Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa commended the institution for the recognition, adding that this is a great one and worthy of celebration. “Looking back at LASU with the latest development, I think it deserves what it has been recognized for. I am surprised with the level of infrastructural development in the school, in the area of academic performance; we are not surprised that LASU has been recognized. In the past, LASU has always been recognized especially when it comes to legal education; the Law Department has always been at the forefront.”
“With this latest development, it is a call that we can get to the same level as others internationally.”
The Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Oluyinka Ogundimu while commending LASU said “This is a great height they have attained in this shortest time.” He noted that before this time there was always one crisis or the other in LASU until the House resolved to the amendment that the institution will only have single five year tenure for the office of the Vice Chancellor.
He expressed that a notable occurrence in this area is that for the first time in many years there has not been any form of crisis from the Student Union and the academic performance has been excellent. A lot of researches from the institution have been recognized by various international bodies which has attracted lots of cash donors in the area of research, adding that students have been outstanding in various areas and about seventy programmes has been accredited which has placed LASU in the limelight.
“In 2018, LASU was named Africa Centre of Excellence in initiative self-education by the World Bank”. He said.
Hon. Rotimi Olowo appreciated the fact that this House ensures LASU get its budget in due time. He added that “LASU needs to be expanded as there has been lots of land encroachment on the institution which needs to be investigated”.
Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu while commending the Staff and Management of the institution said Times Higher Education is the largest and most diverse university platform in the world, an acknowledgement from such body for LASU is a gold standard. For LASU to have come second in a country where we have Federal and private universities, LASU has achieved something great.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa thereafter directed the Deputy Clerk, Mr. Taiwo Ottun to forward a commendation letter to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun to further urge them to do more to attain international height.
