The Yobe state Gulani/Teteba Bridge; has collapsed, cutting off 11
towns and villages from commuting to three states in Northeast.
The collapse of bridge early this year, has forced many people to trek
for over 15 kilometres to get basic needs of life.
A resident of Gulani, Usman Njidda (not real name) disclosed this
Wednesday in Damaturu, while lamenting the cutting off several
communities from commuting to Gombe, Borno and Adamawa states.
He said that since the collapse of Bridge along 100-kilometre
Damaturu/Gulani road, over a dozen communities could not be reached.
“With the collapse of this bridge, farmers and herders in affected
communities could not haulage farm produce and livestock to markets
and granaries,” he said.
According to him, the cutting of communities, has also prevented
people from reaching hospitals and health centres in Gujba and
Damaturu, the state capital.
He listed affected communities to include Gulani Gari and Tuwo, Borno
Kichi, Ruhu, Garin Bauchi, Yelwa and five other settlements of herders
and farmers in Gulani council area.
“This is a federal road but requires urgent attention of governments
at all levels,” he said, noting that they had been patient awaiting
federal government for rebuilding.
He said that vehicles no longer ply the road in the Gujba/Gulani axis,
since the bridge collapsed.
He added that the situation has affected social and economic
activities of farming and herding.
“Since the Bridge collapse, we no longer travel to neighbouring
states, including Dadin Kowa and Damaturu, the Yobe state capital.
He therefore, appeal to three tiers of governments and elected
representatives to rebuild the bridge before end of year.
“It will enable the communities resume their farming and herding
activities,” he said, noting that some of the crops are about to be
harvested.
Njidda warned that residents of affected communities will not continue
to suffer as a result of the collapsed bridge.
