Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state has; paid N149 million bag log of monthly arrears and allowances to corps members serving in the state. NYSC’s Desk Officer, Christopher Godwin-Akaba, who also serves as Seniour Special Adviser (SSA) to Zulum; disclosed Thursday in a statement in Maiduguri that; “The breakdown of paid allowances, include 2019 six months outstanding arrears of N38,8 million for Batch A-outgone corps members.” While the Batch B stream I corps members, were paid N41 million last year; for their nine months outstanding arrears. He said that part of the money would be used to offset June and July 2020 allowances of 2019 Batch B Stream II-outgone Corps members. He added that N24.3 million; was also approved for payments of serving corps members for 2019 Batch C Stream I and II for July, 2020. “With these approvals, the total payments so far made by State Government to serving corps members stood at N351.5 million,” he said, noting that no serving and outgone corps members; are owing government. “We’ve cleared all the bag log of corps members’ allowances up to July, 2020.” he said, adding that the Governor has also approved the downward review of non-medical corps members’ monthly allowances serving in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to N5, 000. According to him, the review is necessitated by current financial constraints coupled with competing demands on State’s limited resources. He noted that the downward review of allowances; did not affect medical corps doctors and paramedics. He therefore; enjoined affected corps members to be patient, as the state government has begun paying the allowances into their bank accounts.
