Zulum to employ 19 doctors,150 nurses run Borno hospitals, health centres

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state is to employ 19 doctors and 150
nurses to run hospitals and primary healthcare centres.
According to him, 37 Primary Healthcare Centres were completed with 28
ongoing health projects, including training of community health
workers.
Zulum disclosed this Wednesday; in Maiduguri, while inaugurating
13-member technical committee; on the establishment of Borno College
of Medicine and State’s Teaching Hospital (BOTH).
He said that the Borno State University (BOSU); has attained critical
criteria for the establishment of College and Teaching Hospital.
“The inauguration of this committee is in line with professionalism in
the medical and health sectors,” he said.
On healthcare delivery challenges, he said: “Inadequate qualified
medical personnel and doctors in the state, particularly in council
areas, are a major challenge affecting healthcare delivery system.
He said the completion of college of and teaching hospital could also
reduce ratio of doctors to population; to promote healthcare delivery
in the state.
The committee, being headed by Prof. Othman Kyari, University of
Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) has 13-point terms of reference.
According to Zulum, the committee is to examine and advise on
feasibility of establishing the college of medicine and teaching
hospital.
“You’re to produce all relevant technical documents, including
appropriate designs and cost implications for the two health
projects,” he said, adding that appropriate sites of projects, should
also be identified by committee.
Other terms of reference, include advice on strategies of employing
qualified academic staff for Departments of the college of medicine.
He added that the committee members should also advice on smooth
takeoff the teaching hospital.
The committee has three months to submit its report to the Governor
for implementation.
