WHO records 121 fresh COVID-19 cases in Borno, Adamawa, Yobe

Date:

The World Health Organisation (WHO); has recorded 121 fresh cases of
coronavirus (COVID-19) in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
The new cases; were reported last week during the global health
agency’s COVID-19 weekly snapshots in Maiduguri, the Borno state
capital.
According to Report, Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) accounted
for 72 per cent of 767 cases of COVID-19 in three insurgency affected
states.
“Sixty seven or 9% of all confirmed cases in the three states are
health workers; with Borno having 42 health workers contracting the
disease, while Yobe and Adamawa states; had 14 and 11 cases,” said the
report.
On last week’s new cases, the report said: “More than 80% of the
confirmed cases this week; were isolated at passengers’ points of
entries, including Njimtilo, Dalori and Gubio road check-points,”
In Borno state; over 20,000 passengers at the entry points were
screened by COVID-19 front line health workers.
While halting further spread of pandemic, the report said that;
screening continues across 26 locations in 21 Local Government Areas
since the campaigns against the pandemic that claimed about two dozen
lives.
The report noted that; as case fatality ratio rises from 2.3% to 7 %;
the discharged patients hit 620 during the period under review.
Four challenges were however encountered, while fighting the COVID-19
pandemic in three affected states.
“There was poor compliance and enforcement of ban on inter-state
movement and the use of face masks, social distancing, and adequate
hygiene practices by the general public,” said the report, adding that
high risk of wider community transmission in Internally Displaced
Persons (IDPs) camps and communities also led to fresh cases of
COVID-19.
It noted that; there are inaccessible locations, yet to be reached for
active COVID-19 cases and community sensitization campaigns.
