FAO Restores Livelihoods Of 3,400 Borno Households With Hybrid Goats

The Country Representative of Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO)
in Nigeria; Al Hassan Cisse; has said that high breeding goats were
distributed to 3,400 household farmers restore their livelihoods in
Borno.
Various means of livelihoods of returning Internally Displaced Persons
(IDPs), were destroyed in the decade long Boko Haram insurgency in
Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
According to FAO’s representative, the distribution of 13,600 brown
goats to IDP Households; was to promote sustainable means of
livelihoods destroyed by insurgents.
While distributing hybrid goats on Wednesday in Gongulong Community of
Borno state, Cisse disclosed: “The breeding of distributed goats could
ensure food security, employment and nutrition among returning IDPs in
communities,”
He noted that since IDP returnees depend solely on livestock breeding,
the goats are to be restocked as their live assets.
“Beneficiaries of livelihood restoration with goats, will get cash
transfer of N15, 800 from World Food Programme (WFP) in three
tranches,” adding that the cash are to feed goats and returnees’ daily
stipends.
FAO’s Livestock Officer, Abdulrahman Mohammed, who represented Cisse;
disclosed that the targeted IDP returnees are widows and the
vulnerable of Gongulong community.
He said that under FAO’s livelihoods restoration project, 1,100
households in Adamawa, including 1,750 households in Yobe state, were
distributed with 11,400 high breed restore their livelihoods.
While speaking on bulls’ fattening project, he said: “No less than
1,400 IDP returnees in Borno state; were also engaged in bulls
fattening to earn incomes,” noting that this will end reliance of
displaced persons on humanitarian assistance.
