Zulum provides enabling environment to implement community policing in Borno

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state; has reiterated the commitments
and determination of his administration to ensure a secured society
for a peaceful coexistence of citizens.
Zulum made the pledges on Tuesday, while inaugurating the full
implementation of Borno State Community policing at the Government
House Multi-purpose Hall, Maiduguri.
The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Umar Kadafur,
disclosed that; “The state government is willing to cooperate with the
Nigerian Police.
According to him, the full cooperation; will also create an enabling
environment for the officers and men to work in harmony with various
members of communities in which they operate.
His words: “All the citizens of Borno State should provide their
maximum support and cooperation to the Police to create a crime-free
society.
“Our collective support to the Nigeria Police; is a major concrete
enabling environment to fully implement community policing protect
people’s lives and property.”
Continued; “The inaugurated community policing initiative; is no doubt
came at a light and will go a long way in reducing rate of crimes,
particularly the Boko Haram Insurgency that claimed 36,000 lives with
property worth $9 billion (N3.24 trillion).”
While speaking on its implementation, he said: “Community policing in
Borno state; however; requires more robust community efforts along
with law enforcement agents to contain.”
In his brief remarks at inauguration, the Inspector General of Police
(DIG), represented by DIG of police, department and logistics and
supply, Aminchi Baraya said: “The concept of community policing is
very Important and will help in the formalization of the same ideals
and principles for more proactive, efficient and effective community
policing,” noting that; it’s a more challenging situation of
protecting people’s lives and property.
The Borno State Police Commissioner, Aliyu Indasu also disclosed that
the present security arrangement; which involves Civilian JTF,
Hunters, traditional rulers and all stakeholders in the fight against
insurgency makes it very easier to implement community policing.
He therefore; appealed for more support and cooperation in the
implementation of community policing in the state.
The State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice; Hon. KaKa
Shehu Lawan also commended the initiatives of the State Government and
Nigeria Police.
“They have come up with a very good initiative of tackling insecurity
to lives and property in the state,” he said.
He said that the formation of two committees, comprise traditional
rulers, security agencies, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Nigeria
Labour Congress (NLC), Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Nigeria Union of
Journalists (NUJ), National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and
representatives of community leaders.
