Buni Inaugurates Community Policing In Yobe

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe state; has yesterday inaugurated an
eight-member State’s Community Policing Advisory Committee (CPAC) to
check criminal activities.
CPAC is a policing tool designed and developed by the Nigeria Police
Force to ensure a crime free-society.
While inaugurating the committee members Wednesday in Damaturu, Buni
disclosed that; “CPAC is to implement a broad-based community
engagement and partnership on crime control and prevention.
 The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Idi Gubana
said: “With inauguration of this committee, law enforcement agencies,
particularly the police can promote positive and productive community
cooperation, collaboration and participation in curbing crimes.”
The eight-member committee, comprises the state Commissioner of Police
as Chairman,  Chairman of the State Council of Traditional Rulers as
co-Chairman, and heads of Security agencies in the state.
Others are the state Chairman of Police Community Relations Committee,
the state representatives of Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic
Affairs, and state Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria
(CAN).
The committee also included a representative each from three
senatorial districts of the state and the Director of Security from
the office of the Secretary to the State Government.
He added that the mandates of the state advisory committee were drawn
from the NPF community policing framework.
According to him, the committee was to proffer advice on the local
needs and priority areas for police services in the state based on
prevailing circumstances.
“The committee is also to advise the leadership of the police in the
state on the issue of crime and quality of life that affected local
communities,” he said; noting that committee members are expected to
disseminate information received from the police to community and vice
versa.
He therefore; urged security personnel, traditional rulers, community
leaders and the people to support and co-operate with committee’s
objectives on crime-free society.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, also noted that one
of the strategies of addressing lingering issue of insecurity in
northern Nigeria; was through community policing scheme.
Adamu, represented by Aminci Baraya, a Deputy Inspector General of
Police said: “We have conducted research into it and what we are doing
today is the implementation of findings of research.”
Yobe Police Commissioner, Abubakar Sahabu, said that the concept of
community policing had been adopted and implemented with great success
across the globe.
