The Federal Government has delivered trucks of food items and building materials to Borno state Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) fire victims. Over 9,600 IDPs were displaced last Saturday, following the gutting of 1,613 makeshift shelters at the Muna Albadawy camp on Dikwa road, Maiduguri. While presenting the delivered relief materials Tuesday to Governor Babagana Zulum in Maiduguri, the Minister of Humanitarian and Disasters Affairs, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq said; “Today’s visit to Borno; was to condole fire victims of Muna Albadawy IDP camp that led to deaths of two displaced persons. The delivered items and materials, included rice, beans, maize grits, cooking oil, timber and roofing sheets and nails. “At the Ngala IDP camp early this year, we lost 14 lives of displaced persons,” noting that there were incessant fire outbreaks in Borno camps that require humanitarian intervention and technical support. According to her, challenges of IDP camps infernos and humanitarian assistance require new strategies avert future occurrences. “We’re closely monitoring the situation with the adoption of new strategies to protect people’s lives and property,” adding that the Federal Government will kick start recovery and resettlement projects for IDPs. She said 10, 000 housing units are to be built to accommodate over 1.76 million displaced persons in Maiduguri metropolis, Monguno, Dikwa, Gajigana, Pulka and Gwoza, a border community with Cameroon. While receiving the food items and building material, Governor Zulum said: “The only solution to incessant IDP camps fire outbreaks, was to ensure that permanents houses are built to return all the displaced persons to their communities.” He said that the state government will partner with Humanitarian Affairs in equitable distribution of delivered relief and building materials. |
