Troops of Sector 3, Operation Lafiya Dole have Thursday repelled attacks on Borno community with the killing and recovery of a terrorist and arms. The repulsion, according to Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, is continued hunt for fleeing Boko Haram insurgents from the Lake Chad region and Sambisa Forest. Media Coordinator of Army, Col. Aminu Iliyasu in a statement Friday in Maiduguri disclosed that four AK-47 rifles and a Rocket Propelled Gun (RPG) tube and 60mm Commando Mortar, were recovered. According to him, the troops also recovered an abandoned Gun Truck and a Motorcycle belonging to fleeing terrorists. “The troops deployed at Gubio successfully repelled a Boko Haram attack on their location and neutralised one of the insurgents,” he said. Other items recovered during the mop-up operations, include AK-47 riffle magazine, a Very High Frequency (VHF) radio, a mobile phone and syringes/ample of injections.
He said troops of 231 Battalion also arrested a Boko Haram criminal suspect; Baana Zakari, known as Okocha at the Biu Motor Park. “Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect acts as an informant to Boko Haram criminals within Bama general area,” said Iliyasu.
He added that troops of 231 Battalion in conjunction with 331 Artillery Regiment and vigilantes arrested a logistic supplier, Alhaji Lawan, who is also known as Caffenol at the check point of Maina Hari. On Lawan’s arrest, he said: “He was arrested while trying to cross with some consignments believed to be meant for the criminals. “Items recovered from the suspect include two jerry cans each of palm and vegetable oil, cartons of biscuits and spaghetti and 30 packets of mosquito coils.” He said that the suspect is cooperating with Army by making confessional statements during interrogation.
