NATIONAL SECURITY AND THE NATIONAL INTEREST MUST AT ALL TIMES BE IN ACCORDANCE TO THE RULE OF LAW

Date:

ABUJA, 27 August 2018 — Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP) has stated that as one of the key tenets of a democracy, the supreme of the constitution and the rule of law, which must supercede any other consideration, in order to not take the country back to the tyrannical days of military dictatorship where rulership was by the whims and caprices of individuals
The Party said this in response to the unfortunate address President Muhammadu Buhari delivered at the opening of the 2018 Nigerian Bar Association Annual (NBA) General Conference in Abuja on Sunday 26 August. He said, “The rule of law must be subject to the supremacy of the nation’s security and national interest.’ ANRP strongly denies this as it is inconsistent, as it opens the door for the ‘rule of man’ instead of the rule of law.
The Party expressed concern that this could be a ploy to reenact the notorious Decrees 2 and 4 through the back door and to give justification for blatantly violating court judgements, undermining the judiciary, and refusing to give due recourse to the legislature. Without these in place, we will have no  democracy as our civil rule is so called. It is also creating the opportunity to justify and cover up for Kemi Adeosun the finance minister with a clear case of forgery hanging on her neck for 51 days today under the pretext of ‘the national interest’.
ANRP is committed to pay due vigilance to ensure that our civil rule is not finally destroyed, and aberrations made the norm.
