The Senate Leader, Sen. Ahmed Lawan has said that 4,000 vulnerable
persons from six Local Government Areas of Yobe state, are to undergo
free “eyes test and surgeries” to overcome health challenges of sigh
seeing and productivity in the Senatorial North District of the state.
The senatorial district comprises six council areas of Bade, Nguru,
Jakusko, Yusufari, Machina and Karasuwa, with long reported cases of
blindness, cataracts and sight-seeing at nights among the old and less
privileged.
Addressing patients on Sunday at surgical operational sites in Gashua
and Nguru, Sen. Lawan said the free eye treatment scheme; was to
support the old and less privileged, who cannot afford eye surgeries
and treatments.
His words: “The intervention here is largely to capture those people
who have sight challenges and who could not afford the medical cost to
regain their sights.”
He commended the six affected councils and traditional rulers for
mobilizing the people to come out for the treatment.
Sen. Lawan said that the eye treatment scheme has two teams of
surgeons and other medical staff to carry out the eye surgeries at
Gashua and Nguru.
While commending Governor Ibrahim Gaidam for the massive intervention
and expansion of health facilities, he said: “The establishment of a
Teaching Hospital, renovation and expansion of general hospitals in
the state will promote accessible and affordable healthcare delivery
to the people.”
Musa Suleiman, a 62 year old patient, said he lost his sight five
years ago and resorted to street begging for livelihood.
“My sincere gratitude goes to Sen. Ahmad Lawan for sponsoring this
surgery which has restored my sight and enable me to pursue decent
means of livelihood,” said Suleiman.
The free eye treatment scheme; comprises surgeries, provision of drugs
and prescription glasses for beneficiaries from the six affected
councils.
